My
love for pottery started way back in 1965, when I first visited Sardar
Gurcharan Singh's Delhi Blue Art Pottery. The lovely brick house at
Factory Road in New Delhi, with all types of pottery lying everywhere
and students learning and practicing quietly in the shade of the Neem
trees fascinated me greatly.
Though circumstances did not allow me to be a potter myself, my passion
for pottery constantly urged me to be attached to it in one way or
another. As a hobby, I started collecting studio pottery. Throughout
the next thirty or so years I kept in touch with pottery through Sardar
Gurcharan Singh and the Delhi Blue Art Pottery, visiting exhibitions
organised by them. When the pottery closed down and Gurcharan Singh
formed the Delhi Pottery Trust I continued to keep in touch with them.
In 1996 I was made a trustee of the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust. Subsequently
I co-ordinated a book called Pottery and the Legacy of Sardar Gurcharan
Singh. This was published by the Trust in 1998.
The
Website
During
my research for the book I gathered quite a large amount of information
on ancient pottery, pottery traditions, and contemporary styles. This
web site has come about as a result of wanting to share this information
with other pottery lovers all over the world. The web site is not
a research document, nor does it claim to be the final authority on
the subject. The information contained here is collected individually
through exchanges with friends, archaeologists, traditional potters,
commercial potters, studio potters and general pottery lovers. The
site also offers space to advertise pottery-related events for a nominal
charge.
Gallery
Twentyfive
In 1996 I started Gallery Twentyfive. This is a gallery with a difference
as it is meant for exhibiting studio pottery. Through the site,
Gallery Twentyfive will be organising events and pottery-related
tours in and around Delhi. The gallery remains open for exhibitions
from October to March every year. Presently undergoing renovation,
it will reopen in October 2002.
