Budhi Ram Prajapati was born in 1953 and has been practising this craft for the last 25 years. Born in a traditional family of potters in Haryana, Budhi Ram was initiated into this craft by his elders at a very tender age. He made this item because of its popularity and recognition among the ancient kings. He received the National Award for excellence in Terracotta Craft in 1996.

Technique

For this item (hukka), fine clay has been used. First, the clay is dried for 2-3 days and then powdered, filtered and soaked in water for three days. This soaked clay is transformed into 'gondas' by removing pebbles. Then by putting the 'gondas' on the potter's wheel, the different parts of the hukka are made and in making each part a two-day gap is kept. When half of the hukka is ready a pipe made of clay is fitted in the middle, which is one inch above from the bottom of the hukka. The item is then dried in the sun for one month and then it is baked in the kiln.
